The Advisory Council at CMPI plays an important role by providing guidance and expertise to support the development of our young musicians. We recently spoke with Ms. Thompson, a valued member of the Council, to learn more about its purpose, structure, and impact on CMPI’s vision.

“Our Advisory Council is Unique”

“Our Advisory Council isn’t like a traditional board,” Ms. Thompson explained. “It’s a collective of professionals from various arts organizations who share a passion for CMPI’s vision. We each bring unique insights to help guide the program, but we don’t formally approve decisions. Instead, we provide thoughtful feedback on CMPI’s initiatives, offering perspectives that help refine and strengthen the organization’s plans.”

Ms. Thompson noted the Council’s broad connections, which help in recruiting new students. “Members of our Council work in roles where they regularly engage with young musicians. They’re able to share information about upcoming auditions and programs, which helps us reach talented students across the city.”

The Council’s connections are invaluable, bringing together representatives from organizations like the Music Institute of Chicago (MIC), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). These partners, Ms. Thompson shared, often provide CMPI with access to venues for auditions, performances, and meetings. “Thanks to CYSO, we have spaces for recitals and auditions. Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall and MIC’s Nichols Hall are among the many wonderful venues we use,” she said. “These spaces allow our students to perform across the city, close to their own neighborhoods.”

“The Support We Offer Goes Beyond Traditional Resources”

Ms. Thompson emphasized that CMPI’s mission is deeply embedded in its operations. “While our Council provides input and oversight, ensuring alignment with our mission is ultimately CMPI’s responsibility,” she explained. “We provide resources that offer real-world opportunities – such as performance spaces, access to master classes, and complimentary tickets to professional concerts. These experiences allow students to engage with the professional music world and foster a sense of belonging.” She added, “We’re creating pathways for students who might not otherwise have access to these experiences. It’s about helping them envision themselves in these roles and inspiring them to reach their full potential.”

“CMPI’s Vision is the Heart of Everything We Do”

Ms. Thompson also spoke about how the Council aligns with CMPI’s purpose and values. “While the Council provides input, ensuring CMPI’s vision stays true is the organization’s responsibility,” she noted. “We’re here to support, but CMPI’s staff and leaders have an unwavering dedication to their purpose.” She mentioned that CMPI collaborates with an external evaluation firm, Aim and Arrow Group, to assess its programs annually. “This is crucial,” she said. “These evaluations show where we’re thriving and where we have room to grow, helping us refine and adjust program designs as needed.”

“Success Means Empowering Our Students for the Future”

For Ms. Thompson, the true measure of CMPI’s success goes beyond immediate achievements. “Success for us is when our students graduate and go on to respected conservatories and music programs – and receive the financial support they need to attend,” she explained. “But it’s even more meaningful when they return to give back to the community that supported them. Their accomplishments reflect their dedication and the nurturing environment we strive to provide. Our goal isn’t just to teach them music but to empower them to shape their own futures and realize their potential.”

“The Council Keeps CMPI Dynamic and Relevant”

The Advisory Council, according to Ms. Thompson, plays a critical role in CMPI’s ability to stay responsive to students’ evolving needs. “We’re continuously looking at what we can offer, whether it’s performance opportunities, networking avenues, or exposure to professionals in the field. The Council’s role is to ensure CMPI remains a dynamic, forward-looking organization that’s ready to adapt as our students’ needs change,” she explained.

“Our Commitment is to Uplift and Inspire”

Reflecting on the Council’s focus, Ms. Thompson expressed her dedication to CMPI families and supporters. “I want them to know that every member of this Council is deeply invested in each student’s success,” she said. “We’re not just here for the organization; we’re here for the kids, to open doors, to inspire them, and to give them a strong foundation for their future.”

Ms. Thompson’s reflections on CMPI’s impact were a testament to the Council’s commitment to the students. “We’re all part of the same village working to support these young musicians. The Council’s goal aligns with CMPI’s – to empower students, inspire resilience, and provide them with the resources they need to thrive.”

In closing, Ms. Thompson offered heartfelt thanks to the Council and the entire CMPI community for their dedication. Her insights reflect the profound impact of collective support on CMPI’s future and its students’ dreams, further reinforcing the Advisory Council’s vital role in helping CMPI empower young musicians to achieve their fullest potential.
