Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries, and programs like the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI) are working to ensure that young musicians of color have access to the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to excel in the field. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with Christine Taylor Conda, a CMPI Advisory Council Member. As the Director of Education and Community Engagement Programs at Ravinia, she brings a unique perspective to how CMPI is reshaping the future of classical music.
A Journey Rooted in Music and Education
Christine’s passion for music and education is deeply rooted in her personal and professional journey. With a background in sociology focused on urban education and a Master’s in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, her career merges her two loves: music and empowering young people. For over 20 years, Christine has directed educational programs at Ravinia, where she oversees initiatives that connect communities to music.
Her involvement with CMPI began at the initiative’s inception when the Mellon Foundation challenged cities across the country to address barriers preventing young people of color from advancing in classical music careers. Alongside leaders from the Merit School of Music and the Chicago Sinfonietta, Christine helped shape the vision of CMPI.
CMPI’s Mission and Impact
CMPI provides resources for students of color who aspire to pursue professional careers in classical music. Reflecting on the program’s mission, Christine shared how CMPI will change the narrative. “When you look at the country’s orchestras, you just don’t see many people of color…and that is heartbreaking to me. We’re going to intensely try to break down the barriers that would prevent children of color from pursuing their musical careers in classical music.”
Our fellows have grown immensely through the program, receiving mentorship, college application guidance, and scholarship support to pursue a music career.
Playing A Supportive Role
As a partner institution, Ravinia plays a crucial role in supporting CMPI. Christine’s responsibilities on the advisory board include ensuring Ravinia is a good partner, listening to the needs of the CMPI fellows, and finding ways for Ravinia to contribute. This includes providing performance spaces for recitals, hosting special events for CMPI students and families, and even making financial contributions to the program. These efforts ensure that CMPI fellows have the resources and opportunities to excel.
Encouraging Families to Invest in Music
Christine’s advice to parents underscores the importance of supporting their children’s passions. “I would encourage parents to listen to their children and try to take them as far as their children really want to go. And I would equate this to what one would need to do if you have a child in a sport and you see that they have a talent and a passion for that sport…Even if music doesn’t become their ultimate career, it’s still so wonderful for them to focus and put forth so much energy and really have so much drive to go for something.”
For families hesitant about the viability of music careers, Christine points out the diverse opportunities in music beyond performance, including teaching, arts administration, and production.
Future Goals for CMPI
Looking ahead, Christine hopes to see CMPI’s sustainability ensured through continued fundraising and the development of a large alumni network. “Ultimately, I hope that CMPI will have a very big alumni network. I hope that…young people in CMPI will remember how that all came to be, and maybe they’ll be a big support for CMPI in the future.”
A Personal Note
Programs like CMPI remind us of the importance of breaking barriers and providing young people with the resources to achieve their dreams.
Christine’s passion, dedication, and vision serve as a testament to the power of music to change lives. As CMPI continues to grow, it will undoubtedly shape a more diverse and inclusive future for classical music.
