WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT MUSICAL EXPERIENCE SO FAR: The most significant is when I fell in love with music. At first I though practicing my instrument was a waste of time and my parents were just making me do it just because. However coming into highschool I came with a passion to not be the best but to be better. My band teacher told me about a Honors Band at UIC and me and my friends went. The first song we rehearsed was Halcyon Hearts and it touched my soul. I began tearing up and it felt beautiful. It was just the first rehearsal but it sounded as if it had already been perfected by the band I was in. There are no words to explain what I felt that day but it changed my whole view of life and of my instrument, it will forever be my most memorable and significant because it has led me to be the musician I am now.

I was 13 years old at that time. The pressure was intense while preparing for school finals, as I was enrolled in a high school course at Hononegah High School while still in middle school. MY MOST MEANINGFUL MUSICAL EXPERIENCE: Joining CMPI is the most significant musical experience I have had. That is, once you consider all the great things that have happened because of it. Because of CMPI, I’ve moved from violin to viola which is a much better fit, and found a really great viola teacher, Stacia Spencer. Because of CMPI and their relationship with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, I enrolled in the Civic's 12-week young composers' program and had my song ‘Softly Blue, Suddenly Grey’, featured and performed in their online concert during COVID by Civic Fellows Joe Bricker and Hannah Christensen. Because of that experience, I was recommended to apply for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Initiative under Meade Composer In-Residence and recent Grammy Award winner-Jessie Montgomery. I have since had two of my compositions, ‘Recoverless’ & ‘Magnitude’, performed at The Symphony Center by musicians from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
