As the world – including the classical music landscape – has transformed through a pandemic, some parents and guardians have expressed that they are struggling to find the information they need to help their CMPI fellow succeed. A group of alumni and long term CMPI parents has been meeting to help find ways to make sure parents are getting what they need from CMPI.

While some of these possibilities are still in progress, here are some of the new opportunities.

Facebook Group

Back in 2019, CMPI families had a Facebook group that allowed families to share resources, ask questions, and communicate in real time with other families about everything from summer camps to recitals. We’ve reactivated this group and would love all families to join! Parents, guardians, grandparents, students, and alumni are all welcome. You can visit the group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/cmpifamilies/ Right now, families are sharing summer camp experiences to try to help each other find the best summer program for their CMPI fellow.

Since Facebook now translates, posts can be made in English or Spanish and will be translated to your preferred language.

Parent Experience Committee

Are you interested in giving CMPI feedback on your experience as a parent or guardian in CMPI? A group of parents has been meeting to brainstorm ways to help parents and families get as much as possible out of CMPI. If you are interested in sharing your feedback and ideas, contact James Hall to be added to the group. This month we talked about mentors, onboarding new families, language access, parent engagement, parent-to-parent mentoring, and alumni-to-fellow mentoring. Come join us!

In the Works!

  • Book Club: We are hoping to restart our parent/guardian book club in a virtual form in the near future, with an initial focus on the topic of practicing. Stay tuned!
  • Parent-to-Parent Mentoring: Additional mentorship opportunities may also be available soon. If you are an experienced parent/guardian, please consider mentoring another family, likely with a fellow learning the same instrument. And if you are from a newer family or have a younger student, please think about whether having a parent-to-parent mentor would be helpful for your family. We’ll keep you posted as we continue to think about this possibility.
  • Spanish Language Group: We hope to give extra support to Spanish-speaking CMPI families through a Spanish language group in the near future.
  • Open Parent Zooms: We hope to give parents and guardians the opportunity to hop on Zoom to mingle, ask questions, and discuss relevant topics, including everything from summer programs to college admissions, competitions, and programs.
