CMPI asked our fellows to come up with some New Year’s Resolutions related to their playing, practicing, or other musical endeavors. Here are just a few from our string players:

Violin Fellows

I want to work a little bit on my technique everyday. Specifically vibrato, bowhold, tone, as well as posture.

Along with the violin, I’d like to begin studying solo viola repertoire.

I want to raise my standards in a couple different areas of practice.

  1. Intonation. I really struggle with intonation in some areas where other violinists my age are perfected.
  2. Tone. My tone can be raspy and hard to listen to at times. I play too close to the bridge and have a hard time moving away from it.
  3. Consistency. Although I have been getting better lately, consistency is not a strength of mine. I am working on getting a stronger schedule so as to maximize my learning curve in violin, school, and day-to-day life.

Playing Paganini Caprice #5 at the tempo Michael Rabin did!

Cello Fellows

Some of my resolutions for this year is to focus on my expression on the pieces that I’m working on. I also want to focus on my phrasing in sections on the piece that I’m playing.

My new year’s resolution is to learn every major scale and minor scale at a medium tempo with a legato bowing.
