The 2026 Equity Arc National Convening marked a triumphant milestone for young musicians of color across the United States. Held in the Washington, D.C. area from May 1 to May 3, 2026, the Convening brought together over 100 young musicians of color, families, educators, and national arts administrators. This year’s gathering carried deep significance, successfully restoring the Wind Ensemble program after abrupt executive branch policy cancellations disrupted last year’s event.

This year, CMPI sent a record 15 current fellows and 3 alumni to the event, as well as staff and family members. In addition to the concert, students enjoyed a College and Summer Study Fair that provided networking opportunities with conservatories and summer programs. Masterclasses, sectionals, lectures, and other educational opportunities were highlights for many students. Some students even made a trip to visit the Supreme Court! Guest speakers included Bryan Stevenson, a public interest lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, and Gabriela Lena Frank, a celebrated composer and educator.
The convening concluded with a concert of the Equity Arc Pathways Orchestra and Equity Arc Wind Ensemble on Sunday, May 3. This performance included musicians from Pathways programs from more than 80 cities across the country, aged 12 to 21. Members of both ensembles performed fascinating programs led by conductors Lina González-Granados and Rodney Dorsey.
While students took the stage, educators and pathways staff worked behind the scenes to secure the future of classical music. Collaborative sessions throughout the weekend focused on a unified mission: building permanent, highly structured career pathways to support and elevate BIPOC instrumentalists nationwide.
Thank you to our incredible CMPI fellows, alumni, staff, and families for representing our community on the national stage!
